SUCCESSFUL HOST (Part 3)

by Suvobroto Chattopadhyay at Oct 30 2009 under Art, Entertainment

Always remember just as the guests start to arrive your most important role is not only welcoming the guest and making them feel at ease but introducing the guests around. Never ever slight introductions, as it has been seen that even the most experienced hosts become confused and at times nervous and self conscious on how to introduce their guests. Just keep the following rules in mind and you will sail through. Always introduce a male guest to the female guests never vice versa. The younger guest is to be introduced to the older guest if they are of the same sex unless of course the younger guest is on his own right a very important personality. If a female guest is less than let’s say eighteen years of age then she is to be introduced to the older guests. There may be moments when you may get flustered due to tension and may just forget the name of your guest, just simply admit it that you have just suffered from a temporary mental block and request the guests to introduce themselves. Always introduce guest who are there for the first time with everyone. Always inform the background of the newcomer to other guests and say enough about the others also so that they have a starting point of a conversation. For example you can say that “Guys Suvo just returned from Sudan…”.

You should not think that the party is over once the dinner gets over. This is being discourteous to your guest. I had heard this story or read it somewhere that in upper class society in London years ago the hostess after having received her guests very graciously, left them and went into another room to play bridge, next day in a gathering or in a restaurant a woman walked up to this lady and said that “Lady so and so I was at your party last night” the lady smiled and apparently under her breath murmured “thank God I was not”. You cannot behave in this manner. After dinner get all your guests in the living room area and let the conversation carry on and you continue to be its moderator and waiter and the evening is over only after the last guest leaves.
