I remember my teacher talking about some famous person whose name I am not able to recollect at this moment had said that ‘although you can put your heart and mind into a speech but if you are unable to put your diaphragm into it there will be no speech’. Now the next big question that would strike me how do you put your diaphragm into it. Well this is what my teacher explained to me. One must remember that there is something called the vital center, Doctors call it abdominis rectus and professional singers call it abdominal brain, which helps in providing power, energy and vitality you need for a speech. In order to locate this position or sit in this position what we call as a double L position that is the lower part of your spine should touch the back of the chair, the palm of your hand pressing flat about three inches above your naval and at the bottom of the rib cage, now you stand up slowly and sit down slowly repeatedly and every time you will feel the muscles under your hand tighten. Some other ways to improve and provide support to your voice are as follows – clench one hand into a fist and pretend it to be a balloon and try to blow up the imaginary balloon on a single exhalation while keeping the other hand pressed against your abdominal muscles just below the rib cage area. You will feel them hardening and contracting as you blow. The other one stand in a relaxed manner in front of a mirror and you will notice that if your posture is poor your abdomen will take the shape of a melon and now assume a straight posture and pretend to blow a balloon and immediately you will see your muscles tightening and contracting as though something from behind was pulling them. Notice the visible change in your appearance you will look more alert and positive. In the next part I will tell you more about this and rest assured if you are able to follow it then you will notice a visible change in your breathing power and a noticeable improvement of your voice.
